What is SORA?

The Security Officer Registration Act sets New Jersey’s registration and training requirements for contract security officers. First-time applicants must complete the NJSP application, required fingerprinting and 24 hours of instruction with a certified instructor.

Does NJ issue a temporary SORA certificate?

No. NJSP discontinued the 30-day temporary certificate effective October 1, 2024. Applicants are not permitted to work as security officers until the full process is completed and the Private Detective Unit officially approves them.

How do I schedule fingerprinting?

Follow the fingerprint-vendor instructions generated during your NJSP application. Use the identifiers and current fee shown there rather than an old third-party booking link.

A current government-issued photo ID.

What is the training step?

How do I prepare for my virtual Security Giard SORA class?

- Webcam: It is a requirement to have your webcam on throughout the training class for attendance verification.

What happens after I complete the SORA class?

After finishing the class, you’ll take a final assessment online to complete your certification. Make sure to fulfill all requirements, including fingerprinting. Your certification will be accessible via the NJSP portal and so on.

How does the virtual training differ from in-person training, and will it affect my certification?

It’s the same…. Our virtual training is led by the same live certified instructors who conduct our in-person sessions , ensuring that you get a high-quality learning experience every single time. These virtual classes held on zoom are approved and licensed, mirroring the curriculum of in-person training so that you do not miss out on any thing. Rest assured, choosing the virtual class will not affect the validity of your certification. You receive the same rigorous training and certification, recognized by the New Jersey State Police.

How long is my SORA certification valid, and how do I renew it?

Your SORA certification is valid for two years at a time before requireing renewals. To renew your certification, you’ll need to complete a refresher course and reapply through the NJ State Police before your current certification expires. The renewal process ensures that your skills and knowledge remain up-to-date with industry standards.

How do I access my virtual SORA class?

Once you’ve booked your class, we will email you detailed instructions along with an access code for Zoom, the platform we use for virtual training. Zoom allows for interactive sessions where you can engage directly with your instructors and classmates. It’s user-friendly and ensures a seamless virtual learning environment.

What if I miss a class or part of the virtual SORA training?

If you’re unable to attend your scheduled class or are late, we offer the flexibility to reschedule for the next available class at no additional charge. However, space is subject to availability, and we ask for 24 hours’ notice if possible. Please contact us to confirm availability for rescheduling.

Do I need to be present for the full duration of the class to be issued my certificate?

Yes, attendance for the entire class duration is legally required to be eligible for SORA certification. Should you be late or miss the class, we’ll accommodate you in the next available class without extra cost, ensuring you meet the requirement for full attendance.

Refunds

Students are entitled to a 100% refund if the request is made a day before the training. Unfortunately, refunds cannot be issued for non-attendance or requests made on the day of the class. If you miss your class, you’re welcome to reschedule for another date by sending us an email, without additional charges. As an approved training school, we do not assess non-refundable registration fees, deposits, or cancellation fees.

FAQ for SORA Renewal Class

How often is SORA certification renewed?

NJ SORA certification is issued on a two-year cycle. Start within the renewal window shown by NJSP, complete the state renewal steps and take the required 8-hour refresher before expiration.

What about armed security officers?

Armed officers have separate firearms-permit and qualification obligations in addition to SORA. Do not treat those separate firearms requirements as changing the two-year SORA certification cycle. Confirm current armed-officer requirements with NJSP and the appropriate firearms authority.

Can I work after my SORA expires?

Do not assume so. Check the official NJSP record and follow the state instructions. If the certification is already expired, confirm whether NJSP permits renewal or requires a new application before booking training.

What are the steps to the SORA renewal class?

Here’s a breakdown of the SORA renewal class steps, rewritten for clarity and a more user-friendly experience:

Before you even sign up for the class:

Start your renewal with the NJ State Police:
- Go to https://eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do
- Log in as a “Returning Applicant”. If you don’t have an account, follow the steps to create one and obtain your official registration from the NJ State Police.
- Submit your renewal application and pay the associated fee (Visa, MasterCard, Discover accepted).
- Complete the required electronic fingerprints process if required to.

Now you’re ready to take the renewal class:

Register for the SORA Renewal Class: Find a class offered by a SORA-certified instructor. You can usually find these through security training companies or online.
Complete the Course: The 8-hour refresher class will cover essential security topics and updates.

Fingerprinting is not mandatory to attend the SORA class itself. Although you have flexibility in when you complete the fingerprinting, it’s a crucial step in the overall SORA certification process and should not be overlooked or delayed excessively.
