What is SORA?

The Security Officer Registration Act (SORA) was enacted in 2007 to standardize training across all contract security positions in New Jersey. It mandates a three-step process for certification, which includes registration with the New Jersey State Police (NJSP), completing 24 hours of instruction with a certified instructor, and undergoing fingerprinting. All steps require a government-issued ID and payment by credit card (preloaded cards accepted).

What is the first step to obtaining my SORA certification?

Begin by registering online with the NJSP. This process should take about 10 minutes and costs $75, which also enables you to schedule your fingerprinting appointment. It’s recommended to complete this step on a computer rather than a mobile device.

How do I register with the NJ State Police?

  1. Go to njsp.org and click on the “services” drop down menu

  2. Click on SORA Information

  3. Scroll down to the “Application Section” and click on Security Officer Application

  4. Follow steps to create an account and acquire your six digit ID number

How do I schedule my fingerprinting appointment?

You’ll be prompted to schedule fingerprinting during your NJSP registration, costing $68.98, payable at your appointment. This can be completed before or after attending your SORA class.

What’s the next step after NJSP registration?

Enroll in a SORA certification class. Our classes, available online and thought by an approved and certified live instructor. The classes cater to first-time certifications students and those for renewals, offered on a weekly basis and can be selected through our booking calender.

What are Sora Requirements?

  1. You Should be at least 18 years of age
  2. You must posses a valid photo ID which will be presented atthe class. It must have a valid expiration date, Example: Drivers License, or Passport ID
  3. Before you take the class you must first register and possess “30 day Temporary Certificate of Registration as a Security Officer” which should be printed out. This registration is offcially issued by the New Jersey State Police. To get one if you haven’t done so Click this link: https://eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do
    This is the New Jeresey State Police website site to obtain your 30 day temporary certificate today. You will be required to pay for the certificate when applying.
  4. You will also be required to be fingerprinted ($68.98) by the state licensed (Identogo) agency. You wil be offered this option diuring registratiuon: The web site is https://nj.ibtfingerprint.com. You will only have 30 days to complete the process which means you can do the class without it, however it needs to be done to get certified. You can schedule your class first and then apply for your certificate with the NJSP before attending the class.

How do I prepare for my virtual Security Giard SORA class?

  1. Technology Check:

    • Strong internet connection: Make sure you are at a location with good internet
    • Quiet space: Attend the class from somwhere weher you will not be distrubed for the entire duration
    • Webcam: It is a requirement to have your webcam  on throughout the training class for attendance verification.
  2. Zoom Setup:

    • Understand the basics: If you’re new to Zoom, familiarize yourself with how to join a meeting, mute/unmute yourself, and use the chat function. You can find helpful tutorials online.
    • Access code: You’ll receive your unique Zoom meeting code and instructions via email after your registering for the class.
  3. Get Ready to Learn:

    • Class materials: All necessary documents will be provided upon registrationon the same day.
    • Big screen: Aim to use a computer or tablet which are larger screen devices for the best viewing experience.
    • Engage and participate: Your active involvement is crucial for a successful SORA certification, so please be present mentally as well as physically.

What happens after I complete the SORA class?

After finishing the class, you’ll take a final assessment online to complete your certification. Make sure to fulfill all requirements, including fingerprinting. Your certification will be accessible via the NJSP portal and so on.

What if I forget my NJSP registration login/password?

How does the virtual training differ from in-person training, and will it affect my certification?

It’s the same…. Our virtual training is led by the same live certified instructors who conduct our in-person sessions , ensuring  that you get a  high-quality learning experience every single time. These virtual classes  held on zoom are approved and licensed, mirroring the curriculum of in-person training so that you do not miss out on any thing. Rest assured, choosing the virtual class will not affect the validity of your certification. You receive the same rigorous training and certification, recognized by the New Jersey State Police.

How long is my SORA certification valid, and how do I renew it?

Your SORA certification is valid for two years at a time before requireing renewals. To renew your certification, you’ll need to complete a refresher course and reapply through the NJ State Police before your current certification expires. The renewal process ensures that your skills and knowledge remain up-to-date with industry standards.

How do I access my virtual SORA class?

Once you’ve booked your class, we will email you detailed instructions along with an access code for Zoom, the platform we use for virtual training. Zoom allows for interactive sessions where you can engage directly with your instructors and classmates. It’s user-friendly and ensures a seamless virtual learning environment.

What if I miss a class or part of the virtual SORA training?

If you’re unable to attend your scheduled class or are late, we offer the flexibility to reschedule for the next available class at no additional charge. However, space is subject to availability, and we ask for 24 hours’ notice if possible. Please contact us to confirm availability for rescheduling.

Do I need to be present for the full duration of the class to be issued my certificate?

Yes, attendance for the entire class duration is legally required to be eligible for SORA certification. Should you be late or miss the class, we’ll accommodate you in the next available class without extra cost, ensuring you meet the requirement for full attendance.

Refunds

Students are entitled to a 100% refund if the request is made a day before the training. Unfortunately, refunds cannot be issued for non-attendance or requests made on the day of the class. If you miss your class, you’re welcome to reschedule for another date by sending us an email, without additional charges. As an approved training school, we do not assess non-refundable registration fees, deposits, or cancellation fees.

Am I guaranteed a job placement?

We do not guarantee job placementg, and no school can or should. While we cannot guarantee job placement, we’re committed to assisting in your job search efforts as much as possible.
