Quick Answer: To reset your NJ SORA password, go to eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do, click Returning SORA Applicant, then click Forgot Your Password. You will need your Logon ID plus your application ID or certification number. If that does not work, email pdu@njsp.gov or call the Private Detective Unit at 609-341-3426 during business hours (Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM).
Losing your NJ SORA login is one of the most common problems security guards run into. Most guards only log in once every two years when their card is up for renewal, so forgetting your password is totally normal. This guide walks you through every way to get back in, fix common errors, and print your Electronic SORA ID card step by step.
What You Need to Know First
The New Jersey State Police Private Detective Unit (PDU) runs the whole SORA system. Every login, password reset, and card printout goes through their official website at eapps.njsp.org. No training company, including us, can reset your password for you. Only the State Police can do that.
Here are the three facts that trip up most people:
- The plastic card is gone. As of November 1, 2023, New Jersey stopped mailing plastic SORA cards. Your card is now called the Electronic SORA ID (E-SORA) and lives inside your online account.
- Your Logon ID is case sensitive. If you type it in lowercase when it should be uppercase, the system will reject it even if every letter is right.
- The State Police do not store your password. They can only send a new one to the email address already on your profile. If you lost access to that email, keep reading because we cover that case below.

Step 1: Try the Forgot Password Link First
Before you email or call anyone, try to fix it yourself on the NJSP website. It is the fastest way and works for most people.
Go to: https://eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do
- Click the button that says Returning SORA Applicant
- At the bottom of the login page you will see two small links. Click Forgot Your Password
- The system will ask you for three things: your Logon ID, your application ID or certification number, and your email address
- Your email must match the one the State Police already have in your profile
- Click submit and check your inbox
Where to find your application ID or certification number:
- Your old SORA card (the long number on the card itself)
- Your original approval letter from the State Police
- Any old email confirmation from NJSP from when you first applied
- The 30 Day Temporary Certificate you printed during your first application
Heads up: Check your spam and junk folders. The reset emails from NJSP sometimes get filtered. If you do not see the email in five to ten minutes, search your inbox for the word “SORA” or “NJSP”.
Step 2: Try the Forgot Logon ID Link
If you forgot your username instead of your password, use the Forgot Your Logon ID link right next to the password link. This one asks for more info:
- Your place of birth
- Your application ID or certification number
- Your date of birth
- The answer to your security hint question
The hint question is the one you picked when you first created your account years ago. Common ones are mother’s maiden name, first pet, or city where you were born. If you cannot remember what you picked or what answer you gave, skip to Step 3.
Step 3: Email the Private Detective Unit
If the self-service reset links do not work, or if you no longer have access to the email on your profile, you need to contact the State Police directly. They are the only people who can manually update your account.
Official email for SORA login help:
Write a short polite email and include every single one of these items so the PDU can find you in their system fast:
- Your full legal name exactly as it appears on your SORA card
- Your SBI number or application ID if you know either one
- Your date of birth
- Your current home address
- A phone number where they can reach you during business hours
- A clear note saying you need help recovering your login and password
- If you changed emails, mention the old email AND the new email
Response time: The PDU usually replies the same business day or the next morning. They do not work on weekends, so an email sent Friday evening may not get a response until Monday.
Do not use: PDUPrints@njsp.gov. That email is only for fingerprint questions and will slow down your request if you send login help there.
Step 4: Call the Private Detective Unit
If two or three business days go by with no email reply, pick up the phone. The Private Detective Unit has two main phone lines:
Office hours: Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM Eastern Time. They are closed on weekends and state holidays.
What to have ready before you call: Your full name, date of birth, SBI number or application ID, home address, and the email address on your profile. Having this info in front of you makes the call take two minutes instead of ten.
Be patient when you call. The PDU handles thousands of guards across the whole state, and their phone lines can get busy especially in the morning. If you get a voicemail, leave a clear message with your name, phone number, and the reason for your call.
Step 5: Log Back Into the NJSP Portal
Once you have your Logon ID and password in hand, head back to:
https://eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do
Click Returning SORA Applicant and type in your info. Remember that the Logon ID is case sensitive. If you type “john123” when it should be “John123” the system will lock you out even though every character is right.
Save your login right now before you forget again. Options that work well:
- Write it in a notebook you keep at home
- Save it in your phone notes app with a password lock
- Use a password manager like Bitwarden, 1Password, or Apple Keychain
- Email it to yourself with the subject “SORA login” so it is easy to search later
Also, while you are logged in, update your email address if it has changed. The system sends all future password resets to whatever email is on file. An old dead email will lock you out permanently and force you to go through this whole process again.
Step 6: Find Your E-SORA Card Inside Your Account
After you are logged in, look at the top of the page. You will see tabs like Security Officer or Armed Security Officer depending on what type of license you hold. Hover your mouse over the correct tab and a drop-down menu will appear.
From the drop-down menu, click My Applications. It is the second choice from the top.
Step 7: Open and Save Your E-SORA Card
Inside the My Applications page you will see your current card listed. Look for the blue link that says ID Card and click it. A pop-up window will open showing your Electronic SORA ID.
Important: Right after you finish a training class, your card will show Pass or Yes but the photo slot will be empty. This is normal. The State Police need up to four weeks after fingerprinting to approve and upload your photo. Your card is still valid during this waiting period.
Once the card is visible, you have a few ways to save it:
- On a phone: Take a screenshot and save it to your photos
- On a computer: Press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (Mac) to print, or use Save as PDF
- For extra safety: Email the screenshot to yourself and save a copy to Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox
You do NOT need to laminate your card anymore. The New Jersey State Police officially stated that a digital screenshot is acceptable proof of certification. Your employer cannot reject a digital copy.
If your employer wants extra documentation, go back to the same My Applications page and click Approval Letter. You can download or print that letter as backup proof of your active SORA certification.
The Card Will Not Open: How to Fix Pop-Up Blockers
The number one reason the E-SORA card will not display is that your web browser is blocking pop-ups from the NJSP website. Here is how to fix it in the two most common browsers.
Google Chrome
- Click the three dots in the top right corner
- Click Settings
- Click Privacy and Security on the left
- Click Site Settings
- Scroll down and click Pop-ups and Redirects
- Under “Allowed to send pop-ups”, click Add and type:
eapps.njsp.org
Microsoft Edge
- Click the three dots in the top right corner
- Click Settings
- Click Cookies and Site Permissions
- Scroll down to Pop-ups and Redirects
- Under “Allow”, click Add and type:
eapps.njsp.org
Still Stuck? Try These Quick Fixes
- Open an incognito or private window. Press Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on Mac
- Try a different browser. If Chrome fails, switch to Edge or Firefox
- Clear your browser cookies and cache for eapps.njsp.org and try again
- Use a desktop or laptop instead of a phone. The NJSP portal was built for desktop browsers and works better there
- Turn off your browser extensions temporarily, especially ad blockers and privacy tools
One of these five fixes solves the problem for almost everyone. If you are still stuck after trying all of them, the issue is probably with your NJSP account itself, not your browser. Email pdu@njsp.gov and describe exactly what happens when you click the ID Card link.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset my NJ SORA password?
Visit eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do, click Returning SORA Applicant, then click Forgot Your Password at the bottom of the login page. Enter your Logon ID, application ID or certification number, and your registered email. The State Police will email a new password. They do not store passwords themselves.
What is the phone number for NJ SORA login help?
Call the New Jersey State Police Private Detective Unit at 609-341-3426 or 609-633-9352. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM. They do not answer calls on weekends or state holidays.
What email do I use for SORA login problems?
Email pdu@njsp.gov for general SORA questions including forgotten login credentials. Use PDUPrints@njsp.gov only for fingerprint related questions.
How do I print my SORA card in 2026?
NJSP stopped mailing plastic cards in November 2023. To print your Electronic SORA ID, log in at eapps.njsp.org, hover over the Security Officer tab at the top, click My Applications, then click the blue ID Card link. The card opens in a pop-up window that you can print or screenshot.
Is my Logon ID case sensitive?
Yes. Your NJ SORA Logon ID is case sensitive. Typing it with wrong capitalization will cause the login to fail even if every character is correct.
Do I need to laminate my E-SORA card?
No. The New Jersey State Police officially stated that a screenshot or printed copy of your Electronic SORA ID is acceptable proof of certification. Employers cannot reject a digital copy.
Why is my photo missing from my E-SORA card?
Your photo takes up to four weeks to appear after fingerprinting. During that time, your card will show Pass or Yes but the photo slot will be empty. The card is still valid. Check back in a few weeks and your photo will appear automatically.
What if I lost access to the email on my SORA profile?
Email pdu@njsp.gov directly from any email address. Explain that you no longer have access to your old email, provide your full name, date of birth, SBI number or application ID, and home address. The PDU can manually update your profile with a new email address after they verify your identity.
Can a training school reset my SORA password for me?
No. Only the New Jersey State Police Private Detective Unit can reset SORA passwords or update account information. Any training provider claiming they can reset your password directly is mistaken. They can only guide you through the same steps listed in this guide.
How long does the SORA password reset take?
If you use the self-service reset link, expect your new password within five minutes. If you email the PDU, expect a reply within one business day. Phone calls during office hours usually resolve the issue in the same call.
